#bookreview ~ A Curse so Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer
Hi Guys! Welcome back! Hope you are hanging in there. I know times are hard right now, but things will get better. All of this is temporary and let us just enjoy living in the moment. Who knows when you will have all of this down time like you have right now.
In February, I read the most amazing book that I completely fell in love with. Now I understand those people who need to buy different versions of the book. "A Curse so Dark and Lonely" by Brigid Kemmerer has completely taken my heart. First of all, if you don't know this about me, I am a HUGE Beauty and the Beast fan! I love both of the Disney films and when I found out this book was a retelling of Beauty and the Beast I was like I neeeeed it!
I was not a big fantasy reader, so I was a little bit hesitant on actually buying the physical copy, so I got the eBook edition instead. I didn't want the vibe of my bookshelf to get thrown off, but boy was I wrong. Fantasy is an amazing genre. Thanks to Kemmerer, I have gotten more into fantasy and I can't wait to explore it more. Plus, if I love the story, I need to own the physical copy, just so I can look at it and admire it.
"A Curse so Dark and Lonely," gives us Harper, who lives in Washington DC and was born with cerebral palsy. One faithful night, while standing look out for her brother Jacob, Harper meets Grey, and unwilling transports her to the world of Emberfall. Harper does not want to be trapped there and does whatever she can to return back to DC.
You maybe wondering why was Grey just roaming around in DC? The answer to that is that Grey was looking for a girl to break the curse. Grey is Prince Rhen's trusted and loyal guard. Besides Grey, Rhen is pretty much on his own, since Rhen pretty much killed everyone else in the castle. Rhen is under a curse, thanks to Lilith the enchantress, and needs to find a girl who he will fall in love with, but needs to earn her love in return. If he does not accomplish this, he is bound to repeat the season until he finds the one or when Lilith has had enough of torturing Rhen.
There was not a part of this story that I did not love. There were parts that were a little gory for me, but it did not affect my experience. Personally I don't like reading about people getting killed or attacked, but with the nature of this story, you can't really avoid it.
Harper was also amazing! I love how she was not your typical defenseless girl and was willing to put up a fight to whatever she believed in. My favorite part of the story was that she basically told of Rhen saying that she was not going to fall in love with him just so he could break the curse. I love her feisty attitude. I know she gets much love for representing people who live with cerebral palsy. I don't have much knowledge about cerebral palsy, so I can't say much from that aspect. From what I hear people love that they can relate to her and who does not love that. I'm just happy that Kemmerer added that to her character to create diversity overall when it comes to heroines.
I have never fallen in love with a character until I met Rhen. There was just something about his demeanor that made me fall in love with him. I enjoyed reading from his point of view and despise how he represents himself to the public, on the inside he is a very caring person. The way he fell for Harper and was able to tame the beast, omg I can't!
Grey also took my heart away. Besides being a bit difficult with Harper, he is also a very nice guy. He is loyal to a fault, but we see why he is. The love triangle between the three was bound to happen, but I just wish I had more of chance to read from Grey's point of view. I would have loved to learn his thoughts about Harper, besides the few we get through Harper's side of the story.
Overall, I can rave about this book all day long. It was suspenseful, impactful, and I could not get enough. I can't wait to read more of this series. By the time I wrote this, I have read "A Heart so Fierce and Broken" and it did not disappoint. I will write a review for that soon! Now, I'm just waiting for Kemmerer to release "A Vow so Bold and Deadly" and Jan 2021 couldn't be more far way.
Final Verdict: Everyone must read this! Especially if you love Beauty and the Beast, trust me you will not be disappointed! Such an easy read and the world was built so beautifully. Me being the history buff that I am, I loved being transported into this world and imaging myself in it like it was the medieval times.
Thank you so much in stopping by today! I hope the rest of your day is a fabulous and let me know what has been your favorite book of all time?
