#bookreview ~ The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman

Hi Y'all! Happy 2020! I can't believe we are in 2020 already. I don't know about you, but my brain still thinks the 2000s happened a few years ago, but in reality it has been 20 years since then. I do hope this year and start of the decade brings you joy, happiness, and everything your heart desires.

I thought I would start off this year by reviewing what has become one of my favorite books of all times, "The Bookish Life of Nina Hill" by Abbi Waxman. This book was a Christmas gift from my brother, who I adore deeply, and my last read of 2019.

I was kind of postponing reading until the start of 2020, since I did end the year at 30 books read. I didn't want to have an odd number to end the year, but I couldn't wait. I still had two weeks left in the year. I ended up rereading "Down the Rabbit Hole" by Holly Madison and of course "The Bookish Life."

Nina Hill is your typical bookworm. She much rather be alone reading books in her apartment, than to deal with humans. She works at her local bookstore and leads a Trivia Team. According to Nina, her life couldn't be any better.

Of course, life throws you a curve ball when you least expect it. Nina grew up to be an only child to a single mother. Nina never knew who her dad was. Her mother always explained to Nina that she did not know who he was. Nina's mother was absent for most of her life and was raised by her nanny Lou, who became her maternal figure. Every once in a while, Nina wondered what having a dad would feel like, but it was something she could not picture in her life. One day, she comes to find that she had a father, who is now dead and has inherited this big family. Not only that, it seems she attracted this man who plays on the rival trivia team. Nina's perfect life was changing and she did not like this one bit.

In many ways, I related to Nina so much. Besides our mutual love for books, I much prefer my introverted side and always stick what feels safe versus being a little adventurous. Also, I do not like surprises. It takes me awhile to accept it, but eventually, I come around. I wouldn't say I'm closed off to new opportunities, but I'm hesitant when one presents itself. Plus, having a retail background I felt like I was Nina in so many ways. She is the typical introvert, millennial, who often feels like she doesn't belong anywhere. She is just simply living her version of her best life.

I love how this book present the life of Nina. I often feel like people in their twenties are often shown to be partying 24/7, loud and obnoxious, drunk all the time, have no purpose in life besides partying and wasting their youth away. This book shinned the light to another species of millennial, which are the introverted, wine-drinking, homebodies that some of us are. I often feel like I was either born in the wrong generation or if I was given an old soul and I am living in the body of a 23 year old. I'm so happy Waxman created Nina and showed that not all millennials are irresponsible drunks.

Also can I just comment on how relatable this book is when it comes to dating. I feel like most books love to have someone who is full of confidence that wins over someone who feels lost or weak in a way. This book gave both perspectives of Nina, and her rival Tom, and how both were intimidated by each other and did not know who to approach the situation. It was just a go-with-the-flow situation and I LOVED it! It made me wish something like that would happen in my life instead of always feeling that dating feels like a game. Someone always feels the need to win and someone always ends up being hurt. Yes, I am single, but I am happy where I am now.

This is not your typical rom-com where love is the main focus, but rather focus on the life of someone who struggles with mental illness, always having a plan in place, and always feeling like they are awkward when in reality, we are all human and all we all struggle with something no matter how perfect our lives look on the outside.

Final Verdict: Highly recommend this book! There was not one thing I did not like about this book! To the bookworms out there... trust me you are never going to relate more to a character than Nina Hill 😊

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to visit my humble abode and I hope you have a great day/night! Let me know if you have felt more connect to a character, just because they remind you of you. I would love to know!

Talk to you soon!
